A hardline conservative from Texas is urging fellow Republicans to withhold money from the Department of Homeland Security unless Congress enacts a crackdown on the southern border.

U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, is threatening to tie border security to legislation that would keep the government open beyond Sept. 30, when current funding expires.

In a letter to colleagues, Roy also called for the ouster of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and wants Texas to be reimbursed $10 billion for the money he said was spent on border security.

“While simultaneously working to reduce spending levels and address other urgent policy matters, we must use the power of the purse to force President Biden to end the carnage resulting from open borders,” Roy wrote in the letter. “No appropriation should fund DHS until the necessary steps are taken to secure the border,”

Roy concluded in the letter, “No border security, no funding.”
