The long wait appears to be over: The FBI headquarters is moving to Maryland.
The Biden administration picked a vacant lot in Greenbelt, Md., to serve as the site for the sprawling, multibillion-dollar campus, The Washington Post first reported.
Maryland and Virginia were competing for years for the headquarters.
The new campus will be built on an empty 61-acre plot outside the Greenbelt Metro station.
“GSA looks forward to building the FBI a state-of-the-art headquarters campus in Greenbelt to advance their critical mission for years to come,” GSA Administrator Robin Carnahan said.
An official announcement is expected today.
The current headquarters, a brutalist, concrete building just blocks from the White House, is too cramped and out-of-date for it roughly 5,500 employees.
The FBI will use a smaller office in downtown Washington, according to a senior law enforcement official.
But the decision by the General Services Administration is still subject to congressional approval for funding, and some FBI officials have expressed concerns about the process of selecting the site.
