U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is forcing a vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, saying the Biden administration has mishandled the southern border.

Green, a hardline Republican, alleges Mayorkas violated his oath of office for allowing a record number of migrants to enter the country.

“This isn’t just a southern border issue, it’s affecting our whole country and we have to do something about it,” Greene said after introducing the motion, Reuters reports.

Because the resolution is privileged, it must be voted on in the next two days the House is in session.

But even if the House impeaches Mayorkas, the motion is unlikely to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate.

Since Biden became president in 2021, Border Patrol agents have arrested a record number of migrants who are fleeing economic and political turmoil in Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Republicans blame Biden and Mayorkas for abandoning restrictive immigration policies that were enacted under President Trump.

In a statement Thursday, a DHS spokesperson said lawmakers should stop “their reckless impeachment charades and attacks on law enforcement” and instead “deliver desperately needed reforms for our broken immigration system.”

The spokesperson added that Mayorkas had testified before Congress eight times this year and said that disagreements over policies should not merit impeachment.
