U.S. Marshal Arrested in UK After Being Drunk, Disruptive on Flight to London

A deputy U.S. Marshal was arrested in the United Kingdom for allegedly being drunk and acting inappropriately on a flight from New York, according to the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS).

Michael Brereton, 39, was charged with entering the aircraft while drunk, USA Today reports.

Brereton was also accused of sexual assault, but MPS spokesman Josh Coupe said there won’t be any further action in connection with that allegation.

Brereton and another marshal were allegedly drinking on Delta Flight 1 from JFK to Heathrow to extradite a U.S. criminal when the incident occurred.

The other marshal was briefly detained before being sent back to the U.S.

The U.S. Marshal Service said it was aware of the incident and is cooperating.

“The U.S. Marshals Service takes seriously any allegations of misconduct by its employees,” the agency said in a statement. “The alleged actions of the employees do not reflect the professionalism of the thousands of employees of the USMS or its core values.”
