Officials from four federal law enforcement agencies shot 223 people between 2018 and 2022, according to an NBC News analysis.

The shootings include officers working for and with the ATF, DEA, FBI, and U.S. Marshals Service.

Since federal law enforcement shootings are shrouded in secrecy, reporters collected the data from news reports, press releases, lawsuits, and public documents.

The shootings occurred in 216 different incidents.

Of the 223 people shot, 151 were killed, an average of 30 per year.

The highest number of shootings in one year – 50 – occurred in 2018, followed by 47 in each 2020 and 2022.

A majority of the shootings – 152 – occurred during U.S. Marshals operations. The FBI was involved in 29, the DEA in 24, and ATF in 18.

Roughly a third of the shootings involved federal task force officers.

Texas led the country with the most shootings – 17. That was followed by 13 each in California and Arizona.
