House Republicans will launch a series of impeachment hearings against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas next week, alleging “egregious misconduct and refusal to enforce the law” in connection with immigration policy.
A spokesperson for the House Homeland Security Committee told CNN that the panel conducted “a comprehensive investigation into Secretary Mayorkas’s handling of, and role in, the unprecedented crisis at the south-west border.
“Following the bipartisan vote in the House to refer articles of impeachment against the secretary to our committee, we will be conducting hearings and taking up those articles in the coming weeks.”
The first hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Reuters reports.
In November, House Republicans shelved a resolution to impeach Mayorkas, saying they weren’t prepared to hold hearings.
The hearings come at a time when a record number of migrants are crossing the border. Republicans blame the Biden administration for failing to enforce federal laws to curtail immigration.
In a statement, Homeland Security spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg said Republicans are “pursuing a baseless political exercise that has been rejected by members of both parties and already failed on a bipartisan vote.”
“There is no valid basis to impeach Secretary Mayorkas, as senior members of the House majority have attested, and this extreme impeachment push is a harmful distraction from our critical national security priorities,” DHS spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg said.
“Secretary Mayorkas and the Department of Homeland Security will continue working every day to keep Americans safe.”
