Homeland Security is touting a steep decline in illegal border crossings since President Biden announced broad restrictions on asylum claims.
Arrests for those crossings dropped by more than 40% in the three weeks since Biden announced the restrictions, the Associated Press reports.
Fewer than 2,400 migrants were taken into custody each day over the past week, a decline from 3,800 at the beginning of June. It marks the lowest number since Biden took office.
To resume asylum crossings, that number has to fall below 1,500 a day.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas plans to face reporters on Wednesday in Tucson, Ariz., the busiest area for illegal crossings during much of last year.
Biden’s asylum suspension is triggered when daily arrests reach 2,500.
Meanwhile, advocacy groups are suing the administration to stop the restrictions.
