The FBI revealed Monday it’s investigating alleged attempts by Iran to hack the Trump and Biden-Harris campaigns.
The investigation comes after three staffers on the Biden-Harris campaign received spear phishing emails crafted to look authentic, potentially allowing intruders access to the recipients’ communications, The Washington Post reports. There’s no evidence so far that the efforts were successful.
The FBI has been investigating since June and believes Iran was responsible for the data theft attempts.
“We can confirm the FBI is investigating this matter,” the agency said in a brief statement.
A Harris campaign official said the team “vigilantly monitors and protects against cyberthreats, and we are not aware of any security breaches of our systems.”
The attempted hack occurred before President Biden stepped down from the election and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.
Reporters for The Washington Post and Politico have both said a person contacted them with claims to having access to internal Trump campaign documents.
