A U.S. marshal with a fugitive task force shot and killed a man after being dragged by a vehicle during an attempted arrest in Chattanooga, Tenn., authorities said.

On Oct. 8, the U.S. Marshals Service Smokey Mountain Fugitive Task Force was at an apartment complex looking for a wanted suspect, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). While speaking with residents, an altercation occurred involving two men trying to leave in a vehicle, the Sacramento Bee reports

Investigators say the marshals attempted to stop the vehicle when 44-year-old Samuel Story allegedly reversed, dragging one of the marshals who got caught in the door. In response, the marshal shot Story, who later died at the hospital from his injuries.

The marshal was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The TBI did not confirm whether Story was the person the marshals were seeking. The incident remains under investigation.
