The U.S. Justice Department is joining the investigation into the shooting death of Milton Hall, who was gunned down by police in Saginaw, Mich.,  the Saginaw News MLive reports.

An amateur video of the shooting spurred protests from residents who say police opened fire unnecessarily because Hall was not an imminent threat, MLive reported.

The officers involved in the shootings are back on the job after a 30-day leave.

The video shows a distraught Hall holding a knife but not using it.
