The federal government will continue prosecuting marijuana cases even if ballot measures pass in three states to legalize small amounts of pot, a top Justice Department official said.
The warning comes amid criticism that the Obama administration has been largely silent on ballot measures in Colorado, Washington state and Oregon in November. The city of Detroit has a similar measure on its November ballot.
Approving the measures won’t change the Justice Department’s position on marijuana, which is to enforce federal law that ban the plant.
“We’re going to take a look at whether or not there are dangers to the community from the sale of marijuana and we’re going to go after those dangers,” Deputy Attorney General James Cole told “60 Minutes.”
