Authorities are investigating a viral video allegedly showing a Border Patrol agent mistreating a K9 at the Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint in Texas.

The footage, recorded by Jessica Pena on New Year’s Day, allegedly depicts a Border Patrol agent mistreating a dog. The incident has sparked widespread concern about the ethical treatment of animals employed in law enforcement roles.

Although U.S. Border Patrol has pledged to conduct a comprehensive inquiry, the incident adds to existing scrutiny of the agency. Newsweek previously reported that more than 200 Border Patrol agents are under investigation for alleged misconduct.

The video, made public on Wednesday, was filmed at the Falfurrias checkpoint and has amplified questions about accountability within CBP.

Jessica Pena, who was present at the checkpoint on the afternoon of January 1, claims to have witnessed an agent reportedly kneeing and kicking a K9. Pena shared the video on her Facebook page, where it has since garnered more than 1.1 million views.

The footage captures the alleged abuse before Pena left her vehicle to confront the Border Patrol agents.

CBP has not released details about the situation or commented on the current employment status of the agent involved.

Gloria I. Chavez, chief patrol agent of the Rio Grande Valley Sector, issued a statement addressing the allegations.

“The U.S. Border Patrol takes every allegation seriously. Our K9s are essential partners in our border security mission. We value them deeply and do not tolerate mistreatment or abuse of any kind,” she said in a social media post.

She continued: “We are grateful to the public for bringing this incident to our attention. A full investigation has been initiated, and I want to reassure everyone that the K9 involved is safe. The well-being of our K9 partners remains a top priority.”

Jessica Pena, who recorded the incident, shared her reaction on Facebook.

“Does anyone recognize this Border Patrol agent? She dragged the dog, took him to the side of the building, and started kicking him,” Pena wrote.

“When I tried to get out of my car to intervene, they yelled at me to get back inside. I asked why she was doing that, and they claimed the dog was choking. They also said K9s discipline their dogs differently. Is this acceptable discipline? The dog’s body language, with his tail tucked, tells you everything,” Pena added.

She concluded: “I am heartbroken and angry over what I saw. This happened at 2:51 p.m. on New Year’s Day at the Falfurrias checkpoint.”

Whether the agent in question will face disciplinary measures or legal charges remains uncertain.
