An ATF agent was injured in a shooting Tuesday afternoon outside the Triple S Food Mart in Baton Rouge — the same store where Alton Sterling was killed by police in 2016.
Baton Rouge police said the agent and another person were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the Advocate reports. It’s unclear what led to the shooting or how many suspects were involved, but a large police presence swarmed the scene around 2 p.m.
Louisiana State Police are leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, with the FBI also looking into the events leading up to the incident and possible suspects. Agencies at the scene included the ATF, FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, Louisiana State Police, Baton Rouge police, and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting marked the second time in two days that a law enforcement officer was injured in Baton Rouge. On Monday, a man allegedly ran over a police motorcycle officer with a pickup truck.
The Triple S Food Mart became a flashpoint for national protests after Sterling, a 37-year-old Black man, was fatally shot outside the store by police in July 2016. The killing, caught on video, led to days of demonstrations in Baton Rouge and protests around the country.
