James DiMaggio, the man accused of killing the mother and brother of his kidnapping victim in Southern California, was struck by at least five bullets in the head and chest, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing an Idaho coroner.

Valley County Coroner Nathan Hess said DiMaggio, who was armed and may have fired his weapon at the agents, died at the scene.

An FBI tactical team tracked down DiMaggio at a campsite about 75 miles north of Boise, Idaho, where he was holding 16-year-old Hannah Anderson.

The teen did not know her brother and mother were killed, The Times reported.

Circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.
