Former Attorney General Bill Barr, who served under the Trump administration, said the former president should be most worried about the investigation into his handling of classified documents.
Trump is under multiple investigations and was arraigned last week on 34 felony counts stemming from hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.
But Barr believes Trump’s main concerns should be with the probe of his alleged mishandling of classified documents that were seized by the FBI at his Mar-a-Lago residence.
“I think I would be most concerned about the document case in Mar-a-Lago,” Barr told ABC News’ This Week co-host Jonathan Karl on Sunday.
Barr added that Trump “had no claim to those documents” and that prosecutors have “some very good evidence there.”
Barr elaborated: “I think he was jerking the government around and they subpoenaed it, and they tried to jawbone him into delivering the documents. But the government is investigating the extent to which games were played and there was obstruction in keeping the documents from them. And I think that’s a serious potential case. I think they probably have some very good evidence.”
The classified documents case is being handled by special counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The Justice Department and FBI are pursuing possible obstruction of justice charges in connection with the case.
Trump is accused of impeding the federal government’s efforts to collect all the sensitive records.
