The U.S. Border Patrol has an “alarming” and “detrimental” alcohol problem among its agents, according to an internal memo from the agency’s chief, ABC News 10 reports.
“The Border Patrol is averaging almost two alcohol-related arrests per week,” U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Fisher wrote in the memo. “This continued level and rate of alcohol-related arrests within our agency is alarming and detrimental to the overall well-being of our workforce.”
Among the concerns is that agents are turning up to work under the influence of alcohol while possessing automatic weapons.
“People are showing up to work drunk,” said one agent who spoke with Team 10 under the condition of anonymity. “I want to see this addressed and to end the secrecy of what’s going on.”
