The Central American immigrants illegally crossing the border at alarming rates do not present a danger to Americans and can be handled by the CBP, the agency’s commissioner, Gil Kerlikowske, said Sunday, according to ABC News.

“These are family members, these are not gang members, these are not dangerous individuals,” Kerlikowske told ABC News’ Jim Avila in an exclusive interview, his first since the crisis began. “I think that we all need to work through this problem together as Americans.”

Texas Gov. Rick Perry sharply disagreed, saying the National Guard should be dispatched to help alleviate the overcrowding and squalid conditions.

“He is absolutely and totally wrong,” Perry said. “The idea that there is equity and enough Border Patrol agents is totally and absolutely incorrect.”
