A CBP officer charged with stealing more than $18,000 from international airline passengers pleaded guilty Tuesday.
William Timothy 43, agreed to immediately resign from CBP and pay full restitution to the victims as the result of a plea deal, the Justice Department said in a news release.
Timothy was conducting a border enforcement examination at Naples Airport in Florida in May 2023 when he pocketed more than $2,000 in cash from an international airline passenger. Between then and early 2024, Timony stole cash from 17 arriving airline international passengers during border enforcement examinations and currency verifications.
After the money went missing, investigators examined surveillance video that showed Timothy swiping the cash, according to prosecutors.
Timothy faces up to 10 years in prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
The case was investigated by CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility.
