For lack of a better description, this is going to be cool. Way cool. I have been accepted to the 2013 FBI Citizens Academy being held this fall in Salem.
I’ve done my share of research about the academy, which was started in 1993 and today is offered at 56 field offices nationwide. The Portland Division, one of those field offices, has organized more than 20 academies since 2000, and more than 700 citizens statewide have graduated.
The highlight of the seven-week training program for many is the final session. That’s when attendees get to play with some of the FBI’s toys — as in the guns and gear and things that go boom.
“You’re going to get hands-on experience that is way too cool,” said graduate Art Bobrowitz, a retired public information officer and training supervisor for Oregon State Police. “I’m not going to tell you what all it is, but you’re going to have an absolute blast.
