Daniel Comeaux, head of the DEA’s Houston office, has been named the next chief of the Dallas Police Department.
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson announced the appointment in a press release, saying Comeaux will take over the department on April 23.
Comeaux, a veteran law enforcement official, began his career with the Houston Police Department in 1991 and later joined the DEA, where he held assignments across the country.
He led the DEA’s Houston Division, which spans 12 offices across South, Central, and East Texas, covering 118,000 square miles and 645 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. He oversaw a staff of 750, including special agents, intelligence analysts, and task force officers, with a focus on targeting transnational criminal organizations, violent gangs, and the illegal diversion of pharmaceuticals.
Comeaux joined the DEA in 1997 and rose steadily through the ranks. Over the years, he held leadership roles in Arizona, Mississippi, California, and Washington, D.C., where he managed major operations and helped shape national drug enforcement strategy. In 2018, he was appointed to the Senior Executive Service, overseeing DEA operations across five states and U.S. territories in the Pacific before returning to Texas in 2021 to head the Houston Division.
