Democrats are sounding the alarm over Attorney General Pam Bondi’s sweeping changes to the Justice Department, warning that her tenure has hollowed out the agency and politicized its mission beyond recognition, the Independent reports.
At a heated Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this week, Bondi repeatedly dodged questions about mass resignations, the shuttering of criminal task forces, and decisions to drop investigations tied to Trump allies. Her combative tone, including attacks on Democratic lawmakers, deepened concerns that the department has become an instrument of the president’s retribution.
“I do think the damage she’s doing to the department will take decades to recover from,” Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., told The Hill after the hearing.
Bondi refused to answer Schiff’s questions about the closure of a probe into Trump’s former border czar Tom Homan, instead asking, “Will you apologize to Donald Trump for trying to impeach him?”
Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the committee’s top Democrat, accused Bondi of leaving “an enormous stain on American history.” He pressed her on reports that she discussed deploying the National Guard with the White House, but Bondi declined to comment, saying she wouldn’t reveal “internal conversations.”
During a later interview, Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said the hearing “felt more like a boxing ring than an oversight session.” Despite the escalating tension, Schiff said Democrats would continue seeking “practical remedies,” though he acknowledged the path forward remains uncertain.
