The Justice Department recently informed former President Trump’s legal team that he is the target in a federal investigation into his handling of classified records, The New York Times reports, citing two people familiar with the issue.
The notification signals that special counsel Jack Smith is likely on the verge of charging Trump and that the investigation is nearing completion.
Trump is accused of mishandling national security documents and potentially obstructing government efforts to retrieve them.
The former president, in predictable fashion, claims he is the victim of a “witch hunt.”
Trump’s legal team met with Smith and others at the Justice Department in a last ditch effort to stave off charges.
Trump dragged his feet on returning the material and kept some of the records after saying he had turned over all the information.
During a search of his Mar-a-Lago residence, the FBI found more than 100 classified documents.
Prosecutors are also reviewing evidence that suggests Trump and his team tried to obstruct the government investigation.
