The former interpreter for Shohei Ohtani was sentenced Thursday in federal court in Orange County, Calif., to 4 years and 9 months in prison for stealing millions of dollars from the Dodgers superstar to pay off gambling losses, NBC News reports
Ippei Mizuhara was also ordered to pay more than $18 million in restitution, with the majority going to Ohtani and the remainder to the IRS, NBC reports.
Last year, Mizuhara pleaded guilty to bank fraud and subscribing to a false tax return, in connection to stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani’s bank account.
Mizuhara was ordered to surrender March 24 to begin his sentence.
After serving his sentence, he’ll be on three years of supervised release.
