Facebook alerted the FBI to suspected activity by Kremlin-linked hackers  before the 2016 presidential election.

The Washington Post reports that the social media giant and U.S. government had trouble launching an effective response to the propaganda campaign.

And President Obama warned Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the dangers to democracy of fake news and propaganda.

Facebook struggled to balance users’ right to free expression and protecting democracy against a Russian propaganda campaign.

The social media giant turned over to U.S. investigators more than 3,000 ads that are suspected to be purchased by Russians who were trying to undermine the presidential election.
