An FBI agent provided gruesome details Thursday surrounding the discovery of nearly 200 abandoned bodies in a maggot-infested Colorado funeral home that contained stacks of human remains and bodily fluids several inches deep on the floor.
“It looked like something you’d like to forget but can’t,” Agent Andrew Cohen testified at a hearing for one of the business’ co-owners, the Guardian reports.
The remains, which included children, adults, and fetuses, were stored at room temperature in a ramshackle building in Penrose in October.
The owners Jon and Carie Hallford, who are married, face numerous charges, including 190 counts of abuse of a corpse, five counts of theft, four counts of money laundering and more than 50 counts of forgery.
Authorities said the couple initially fled Colorado to avoid prosecution but were later arrested.
Authorities allege one of the co-owners considered disposing of the bodies in a big hole and treating them with lye or setting them on fire.
