Sanjay Virmani has been named special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Francisco Field Office, the agency announced Monday.
Virmani most recently led the Counterterrorism Division at the FBI’s Washington Field Office and brings more than two decades of experience in national security, cybercrime, and international law enforcement partnerships.
He began his FBI career in 2003 as a special agent in San Francisco, where he worked on cyber and counterterrorism investigations. Four years later, he was promoted to a supervisory role at FBI Headquarters, where he served in the Counterterrorism Division.
In 2010, Virmani returned to the Bay Area to lead the San Francisco Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in the Oakland Resident Agency. He later served as director of the INTERPOL Digital Crime Center in Singapore, overseeing global cybercrime efforts.
Virmani has held several leadership positions since returning to the United States, including assistant section chief of the Internet Operations Section and section chief of the FBI’s Strategic Partner Engagement Section, where he managed counterterrorism coordination with domestic and international partners.
In 2022, he briefly served as acting special agent in charge of the Tampa Field Office before being promoted to deputy assistant director of the Counterterrorism Division. In 2024, he was tapped to lead the Washington Field Office’s counterterrorism efforts.
Virmani holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from California State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo and a master’s degree in business administration from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey.
