The FBI and ATF are investigating whether the shooting of three Palestinian college students in Vermont was a hate crime.
In remarks to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York on Monday, Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed the agencies were investigating Saturday’s shooting.
The ATF arrested the suspect, Jason J. Eaton, on Sunday, and on Monday he pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempted murder in the second degree.
“There is understandable fear in communities across the country,” Garland said. “Even as we speak, the ATF and FBI are investigating the tragic shooting of three men of Palestinian descent in Vermont. That investigation, including whether this is a hate crime, is ongoing. Investigative updates by law enforcement officials in Vermont will be coming soon. The Justice Department is poised to provide any assistance that our state and local law enforcement partners need as we work together to protect our communities.”
Authorities said they have not yet determined a motive in the shooting.
Two of the victims remained in stable condition, while the third man was hospitalized with serious wounds.
Since Hamas attacked Israel in early October, threats to Jewish and Arab Americans have been on the rise.
“Protecting all people and all communities from hate-fueled violence was the Justice Department’s founding purpose in 1870, and it remains our urgent responsibility today,” Garland said. “No person and no community in this country should have to live in fear of hate-fueled violence. Fulfilling that promise motivates us every single day.”
