The FBI is investigating the attempted assassination of former President Trump as a potential act of domestic terrorism, the bureau said in a news release Sunday.
The bureau identified the gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old kitchen worker who was shot dead by a Secret Service sniper.
Agents are trying to determine a motive and the sequence of events leading up the shooting.
While it appears the gunman acted alone, the FBI is trying to determine if there were any co-conspirators.
Agents have obtained Crooks’ phone for examination and searched his home and vehicle to collect additional evidence. Law enforcement officials found suspicious devices at both locations, and those devices are being evaluated at the FBI Laboratory.
The rifle used in the shooting was purchased legally, the FBI said.
The bureau said it was unaware of Crooks before the shooting.
