The FBI is investigating the shooting death of an IRS special agent on Thursday during a routine training exercise at a federal firing range in Phoenix, Ariz., according to federal authorities.

IRS agents were at the Federal Correctional Institution gun range for training purposes, the FBI said in a statement.

Details of the shooting remained murky Friday morning, and the identity of the agent was not immediately divulged.

The gun range is used by multiple agencies.

“The agent was immediately taken to HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center to be treated for the injury,” a statement read. “The agent passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital”

The FBI’s Phoenix Field Office is leading the investigation.

“The FBI’s investigation will be methodical and thorough to address every element of the incident,” the bureau said.

“To preserve the integrity and capabilities of the investigation, details of the ongoing process will not be released,” the bureau added. “Findings of the FBI investigation will be turned over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona for review.”
