FBI agents raided the home of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao on Thursday morning.
Agents carried 80 boxes out of the first-term mayor’s four-bedroom home, the Guardian reports.
The impetus of the raid remains unclear, but a spokesperson for the bureau said the FBI had conducted “court-authorized law enforcement activity.”
Agents also searched two homes owned by the politically influential Duong family, which owns recycling company Cal Waste Solutions. The company has been under investigation for campaign contributions to Thao and other elected city leaders.
Thao, 38, took office in January 2023, but has since been dogged by a relentless crime wave and problems with municipal finances. She’s also facing a recall vote in November.
