Tweets are public.

But people generally don’t see all the tweets they want.

Now, the FBI has signed a deal that will give it access to monitor Twitter’s “firehose” — every tweet posted publicly each day, roughly 500 million of them, writes Matt Rocheleau of the Bloston Globe.

Under the arrangement, the FBI can use a filter with certain words to pluck out tweets of interest.

Civil liberties groups are concerned.

“It’s deeply frightening that the FBI is about to access, and may already have access to, this very powerful tool,” Kade Crockford, from the American Civil Liberties Union, tells the Globe.
