Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said he believes former President Trump “should serve time” if he is convicted of trying to overturn the 2020 election.

“If in fact he’s convicted of the crimes charged by Jack Smith and the Department of Justice, yea, I think he should serve time, quite frankly,” Gonzales, who served in former President George W. Bush’s administration, said in an interview with MSNBC host Jen Psaki

Although “we’re a long way from” a conviction, Gonzales said it would be “fair” to imprison Trump after a grand jury indicted him for his role in trying to cling to power after losing the election.

Trump was charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

Two of the charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Trump also was indicted for his handling of classified documents and his role in a hush money payment.
