U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz is pledging to introduce legislation to defund special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into former President Trump.
The Florida Republican made the announcement on his podcast Tuesday, soon after Trump announced he was notified that he was a target of the Justice Department’s investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
“They are attacking our democracy and engaging in election interference right now,” Gaetz said.
Gaetz also claims the investigation lacks transparency, saying the Justice Department has failed to respond to his request for information identifying the prosecutors on Smith’s team.
Gaetz’s threat is just the latest Republican attack on federal law enforcement following charges against Trump.
U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, has threatened to defund the Justice Department and FBI, claiming the agencies have been politically “weaponized.”
Some Republicans are also trying to move the FBI headquarters to Alabama, far from Washington D.C.
