People are buying guns in record numbers.
The FBI recorded nearly 17 million background checks of gun purchases in 2012, the most since the bureau began compiling the date in 1998, the Huffington Post reports.
Since the background checks don’t include multiple gun purchases, the number of guns sold this year are likely a lot higher, the Huffington Post wrote.
Experts expect last week’s school shooting in Connecticut to cause another spike in gun buys particularly as some members of Congress press to ban assault weapons.
But experts aren’t sure what caused the increase in gun ownership this year, the Huffington Post reported.
