Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano issued a statement following the mass shooting at an Aurora, Colo. movie theater early Friday morning, saying “I am deeply saddened by the terrible shooting.”

“Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies continue to respond to this horrific event and I have directed the Department of Homeland Security to provide any support necessary in the ongoing investigation. We are committed to bringing those responsible to justice. Our hearts and prayers go out to anyone impacted by this tragedy, especially the family and friends of those killed or injured.”

The Denver Post reported that about 50 people were shot — at least 12 fatally — at an Aurora theater during a premiere of the new Batman movie.

The paper reported that a 24-year-old man James Holmes is in custody and an apartment building in north Aurora connected to Holmes was being evacuated to search for explosives.
