Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is backing a proposed reality TV show in which immigrants compete in challenges across the U.S. for a shot at expedited citizenship, according to a 35-page pitch obtained by DailyMail.com.
The show, tentatively titled The American, was created by Rob Worsoff, a producer known for Duck Dynasty and Millionaire Matchmaker. Immigrants would travel the country on a train, taking part in regionally themed contests, such as gold mining in California or log rolling in Wisconsin, with the winner getting sworn in as a U.S. citizen on the steps of the Capitol.
DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin confirmed department officials spoke with Worsoff and are reviewing the idea, though she claimed Noem had not yet been briefed. Sources told DailyMail.com Noem supports the concept and has been pushing for a network deal.
The show would feature contestants arriving at Ellis Island aboard a symbolic “Citizen Ship,” greeted by a celebrity host who is also a naturalized citizen. The proposed list includes Sofia Vergara, Ryan Reynolds, and Mila Kunis.
While some DHS officials are privately concerned about the optics of turning immigration into entertainment, others are enthusiastic.
“I think it’s a good idea,” McLaughlin said.
Critics within the department, however, say the project reflects a broader pattern of Noem focusing on publicity over policy.
“We need leadership committed to logistics and results, not financial gain or reality show theatrics,” one source said.
