Trump Administration Fires 20 Immigration Judges

By Allan Lengel

The Trump administration has fired 20 immigration judges across the nation as part of the Trump administration’s aggressive campaign to shrink the government, Bloomberg News reports.

The cuts come as the administration faces a backlog of immigration cases. The judges decide whether noncitizens should be deported and in some cases if asylum requests should be granted.

It’s unclear if the judges will be replaced.

“The firing of immigration judges when we need more judges to enforce our immigration laws by this administration is a perfect example of hypocrisy,” said Matt Biggs, president of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, which represents the country’s 700 immigration judges.
