Lawmakers are mulling tougher border security measures designed to discourage undocumented immigrants from crossing the border, Reuters reports.
But for the estimated 11 million who have already entered the country illegally, a path to citizenship may be possible under the proposal, said Senator Marco Rubio, a leader on immigration reform.
“What we have in place today is not good for anyone except human traffickers and people who are hiring illegal aliens and paying them less than American workers,” Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, a leader on immigration reform, said on Fox News Sunday. “This is an issue that needs to be solved.”
More details are expected to emerge by Tuesday.
