Federal agents worry that a drug dealer is now in possession of a .223-caliber rifle that was stolen from the backseat of a car driven by a Homeland Security agent.
The rifle was stolen while the car was parked overnight in Brighton, N.Y., the Democrat and Chronicle reports.
The discovery came from Russell Lawrence, a heroin addict who admitted he stole the gun and a tactical police vest.
Lawrence told authorities that he sold the vest and gun to a drug dealer.
The vehicle that was broken into was marked as a DHS car.
According to an affidavit, the agent may have forgotten to lock his car.
