Manhunt Ends: Suspect Arrested in Fatal Shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO

Luigi Mangione

A five-day manhunt following the fatal shooting of a health insurance executive in Manhattan concluded Monday in central Pennsylvania, where authorities arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione.

According to a warrant cited on the New York state courts website late Monday, Mangione faces charges of murder, illegal gun possession, and possessing a forged instrument, The Washington Post reports. The Manhattan district attorney’s office confirmed that the criminal complaint detailing those charges remains sealed.

In Pennsylvania, Mangione also faces five additional charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, possessing instruments of a crime, and providing law enforcement with false identification.

The case began Wednesday morning when Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside a hotel in New York. Police said the attacker fled into Central Park, sparking an intensive search.

A criminal complaint filed in Pennsylvania revealed that Mangione, a Maryland native who recently lived in Hawaii, was recognized while eating at a McDonald’s in Altoona. Officers found a gun and a handwritten note expressing “ill will toward corporate America,” according to Joseph Kenny, chief of detectives for the New York Police Department.

Mangione is currently in custody in Pennsylvania and will require extradition to New York.
