Mexican Cartels Stealing Crude Oil

Don’t worry BP, there may be a less popular distributor of oil products than you: The Mexican drug cartels.

USA Today reports that cartels are tapping into Mexican underground pipelines and siphoning tons of crude oil and gasoline. Some is being peddled in the U.S.

Authorities estimate the thievery is generating as much as $715 million a year, which is helping cartels buy weapons and bribe officials, USA Today reported.

“It’s a big problem and a continual thorn in their side,” said David Shields, editor of Energia a Debate, an oil industry magazine, USA Today reported. “And the states that have drug trafficking have more problems with their pipelines.”
