Over the years, critics have called for the end to ATF. And over the years, the agency has survived.
Once again, there is angst about the agency’s future, particularly considering that President-elect Donald Trump has denounced ATF and vowed to roll back some of its policies, the Washington Post reports.
Steve Dettelbach, who resigned as director on Friday, tells the Washington Post he fears the Republican-controlled Congress will drastically reduce the agency’s budget, and there’s no one in the White House to push back.
“It’s a very small department, there’s not a lot of fat to cut,” Dettelbach said in an interview last week with the Post. “We have absorbed cuts and are facing more.”
