Anthony Coley, a former director of the Justice Department’s Office of Public Affairs, strongly criticized President Donald Trump’s push to appoint Pam Bondi as attorney general, calling her “wholly unqualified” for the role.
Writing in a column for MSNBC, Coley argued that Bondi’s track record and staunch loyalty to Trump render her ill-suited to serve as the nation’s top law enforcement officer.
Coley acknowledged that Bondi’s résumé, which includes two terms as Florida’s attorney general and nearly two decades as a state prosecutor, might superficially appear to qualify her. However, he emphasized that the position requires independence, sound judgment, and the ability to respect judicial rulings — qualities he contends Bondi lacks.
“Serving as the nation’s chief law enforcement officer requires independence and sound judgment and the ability to accept court rulings even when you disagree with them. On these counts, Bondi fails — miserably,” Coley wrote.
He further criticized Bondi’s history of defending Trump during his first impeachment trial, promoting baseless claims of election fraud, and undermining public trust in the electoral system, including her actions in Pennsylvania in 2020. According to Coley, her role in advancing Trump’s false claims about the 2020 election has inflicted lasting damage on the democratic process.
