The controversy over the FBI’s fatal shooting of a Detroit imam last October may not go away any time soon.
The Detroit Free Press reports that a noted pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht, who did a pathology report at the request of the Michigan Chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), has raised many questions, but did not conclude whether the shooting was justified.
For one, Wecht found the Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah was shot twice in the back, not once as the Wayne County Medical Examiner reported, the Free Press wrote. The FBI shot the imam 21 times after he shot and killed an FBI dog during a raid on a Dearborn warehouse where the imam was suspected of being involved in a stolen goods ring.
The pathologist also found that the imam had bites and claw marks from the FBI dog and that the dog fractured his jaw.
Wecht told the Free Press he questioned why the Wayne County Medical Examiner did not note that Abdullah was bit or clawed by a dog.
“No questions the lacerations had to have been dog bites,” Wecht told the Free Press. “I don’t understand why he’s holding back on this.”
The Free Press reported that the Wayne County Medical Examiner Carl Schmidt was not available to immediately comment and the FBI declined to comment because the matter was still open. In previous statements, the FBI has called the shooting justified.
Interestingly, Wecht told the Free Press that he’s not biased in favor of CAIR.
“I’m no shill for them,” Wecht said. “I happen to be Jewish. I happen to be a strong supporter for the State of Israel. …I’m not speaking here as a pro-Islamic terrorist supporter … or anything like that. I’m not coming in here with a biased eye.”
Wecht told the Free Press he’s not clear how the imam was shot in the back and said he might have turned his back after being shot multiple times.
