The Secret Service is investigating how an intruder managed to enter the home of President Biden’s national security adviser last month without getting the attention of the agency’s full security detail posted outside.
The adviser, Jake Sullivan, was unharmed when an intruder made it inside his Washington, D.C., home at 3 a.m. on April 29, The New York Times reports.
The identity of the intruder remained unknown as of Wednesday morning.
Sullivan spotted the intruder, who appeared to be intoxicated, and ordered him to leave the house. The intruder left, and Sullivan notified the Secret Service agents outside his house.
The Secret Service is trying to determine if the intrusion was an accident or if he had criminal intent.
“Any deviation from our protective protocols is unacceptable and if discovered, personnel will be held accountable,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. “Modifications to the protective posture have also been made to ensure additional security layers are in place as we conduct this comprehensive review.”
