Special counsel Robert Hur has finished his report on President Biden’s handling of classified documents that were found at his home and office, Attorney General Merrick Garland notified congressional leaders in a letter Wednesday.
White House lawyers are reviewing the findings, and the report is in the hands of the Justice Department, according to the letter.
“Prior to submitting his report to me, Special Counsel Hur engaged with the White House Counsel’s Office and the President’s personal counsel to allow comments on the report,” Garland wrote. “That included review by the White House Counsel’s Office for executive privilege consistent with the President’s constitutional prerogatives. The White House’s privilege review has not yet concluded.”’
Garland said it’s important that as much of the report becomes public as possible, but the DOJ is waiting on a legal privilege review by Biden’s White House Counsel’ Office.
“I am committed to making as much of the Special Counsel’s report public as possible, consistent with legal requirements and Department policy,” Garland wrote in the letter.
Hurr was tapped to serve as special counsel about two months after Garland appointed former federal prosecutor Jack Smith to be special counsel tasked with investigating former President Trump’s handling of classified documents.
About 20 classified documents were found at Biden’s private home and office. Roughly 300 were found at Trump’s home in Palm Beach.
