Texas Gov. Rick Perry said the dramatic spike in the number of immigrants being arrested has created an “untenable situation” at a Border Patrol facility in southern Texas, the Associated Press reports.
Perry visited the facility following reports of overcrowding and squalid conditions at a Border Patrol facility housing primarily children immigrants.
“This is an absolute humanitarian catastrophe waiting to happen,” Perry said Monday at a Department of Public Safety regional headquarters in South Texas.
Since October, more than 85,000 children have entered the country without an adult.
The surge has left the Border Patrol overwhelmed.
