President Donald Trump said Sunday that he believes it’s possible the Justice Department is investigating FBI Director Christopher A. Wray, calling his behavior “inappropriate.”

“I would imagine. I would certainly imagine. I would think they are doing that,” Trump said in a phone interview with NBC News. “Don’t forget, we just found out about all of these F.B.I. agents being there.”

He appeared to be referencing conservative media reports, which are false, that 274 plainclothes FBI agents were at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The Justice Department’s inspector general has found no evidence undercover agents were in the crowd.

FBI Director Kash Patel later told Fox News that agents had been deployed for “crowd control” after the riot began but accused Wray of lying to Congress. In 2023 testimony, Wray said: “If you are asking if the violence at the Capitol was part of some operation orchestrated by F.B.I. sources or agents, the answer is no.”

Trump has repeatedly tried to rewrite the history of Jan. 6 and target those who investigated him. Days after demanding action on social media against several perceived enemies, including James B. Comey, Adam B. Schiff and Letitia James, Comey was indicted for allegedly lying to Congress. He maintains his innocence.
