In a sign that an indictment is likely, ex-President Donald Trump announced Tuesday on his social media platform that he’s received a target letter from special counsel Jack Smith in the Jan. 6 probe.
In a long rambling message, he wrote on Truth Social:
“WOW! On Sunday night, while I was with my family, having just arrived from the Turning Point event in Florida, where I won the Straw Poll against all other Republican candidates with 85.7% with all polls showing me leading in the Republican Primary by very substantial numbers, almost everyone predicting that I will be the Republican Nominee for President, and as I am leading Democrat Joe Biden in the polls by a lot, HORRIFYING NEWS for our Country was given to me by my attorneys.”
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!)stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and indictment.”
The message goes on to say that “nothing like this has ever happened in our country before or even close’ and that Attorney General Merrick Garland and Biden’s Justice Department have worked together to effectively issue “a third indictment.”
The invitation for Trump, as a target, to testify before a grand jury is not unusual. However, it would be unusual for a target to go before a grand jury. Trump is not expected to appear.
Trump faces state charges in New York in the Stormy Daniels payment and federal charges in south Florida in the document case. If charged in the Jan. 6 probe in D.C., it would be the second federal indictment. He’s also likely to be charged in Georgia in the election interference probe.
