FBI Director Chirstopher Wray warned Wednesday about the increasing danger posed by Chinese cyber assaults targeting U.S. electrical grids and other critical infrastructure.

Wray made the comments during a House Select Committee hearing on the Chinese Communist Party, The New York Times reports

“China’s hackers are positioning on American infrastructure in preparation to wreak havoc and cause real-world harm to American citizens and communities, if or when China decides the time has come to strike,” Wray said.

Before his testimony, the FBI and Justice Department announced they had disrupted a Beijing-backed effort to plant malware that could damage civilian infrastructure.

Federal investigators obtained a court order to access servers infiltrated by Volt Typhoon, a hacking network that infiltrated small businesses, contractors and local government networks.
